Charles Sturt University joins Intersect
Congratulations to Charles Sturt University on becoming the tenth university member of Intersect.
“Joining the consortium allows Charles Sturt University to exploit the extensive eResearch capabilities that Intersect has built to date”, said Intersect CEO Ian Gibson. “As a distributed regional university, Charles Sturt is poised to reap great benefit from this membership, and we aim to help CSU maximise its research capabilities”.
Intersect now represents all ten NSW universities.
eResearch survey round 2 open
More than $97M of federal funding will be allocated towards research infrastructure in the next 12 months via programs such as NeCTAR and the Research Data Storage Infrastructure project.
How will this be spent and will it serve your needs? Have your say on eResearch: participate in our online survey. The survey focuses on technology and its impact on how you conduct research. Your responses will help us advocate on your behalf, as well as to establish priorities at your university.
This is the first longitudinal survey investigating eResearch practices and attitudes across the higher education sector. It opened in 2009 across seven NSW universities, with over 1,000 participants. First round reports are at https://www.intersect.org.au/reports

UWS Climate Change project kicks off
The Climate Change and Energy Research Data Capture Project will support the Cell to Ecosystem-focused Climate Change and Energy Research Facilities (CCERF) at the UWS Hawkesbury campus.
This project will develop the data architecture and associated software systems to automatically capture data and meta-data from three instruments. The systems developed will serve as a basis for additional instruments utilised by CCERF and other research groups.
The three instruments from which data and meta-data will be collected, are:
• Eddy Flux Tower – which collects meteorological and flux data from within an isolated forest environment.
• Whole tree chambers – which collect meteorological data of the environmental impact on a tree wholly encapsulated within the chamber.
• Weather station – which collects meteorological data where positioned.
New appointments
Shahla Ghobadi is Intersect’s new eResearch Analyst at UNSW. Shahla has worked as a business analyst in Tehran and held a number of teaching and research roles at the University of Wollongong and UNSW. Shahla has recently completed her PhD in Information Systems at UNSW.
Aniruddha Dasgupta is our new eResearch Analyst at Macquarie University. Aniruddha has over 10 years experience as a business analyst/ technical consultant in India and held research and teaching roles at the University of Guelp and the University of Wollongong. He has recently completed his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Wollongong.
Shane Youl takes on a new role as Intersect’s IT Manager and will coordinate a number of large infrastructure projects Intersect has in the pipeline. Previously Shane worked at CSIRO and the R&D arm of Canon (CiSRA). Shane has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Mathematics from RMIT, Melbourne.
Intersect Board
Damien Israel has been welcomed as Intersect’s newest Board member. Mr Israel is Deputy Vice Principal (Finance & IT) of the University of Wollongong.
