Murdoch University – Cattle Behaviour Prediction

Intersect’s Advanced Analytics and AI Platform (3AI) is collaborating with researchers from the Centre for Animal Production and Health, Food Futures Institute at Murdoch UniversityJiaxin Fan (Research Data Scientist) and Glen Charlton (Senior Research Data Scientist) from the 3AI team have been closely working with the Murdoch research group, providing hands-on support for field testing protocols, import and processing of large datasets, and the development of animal behaviour models using supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms.

“Intersect has been an invaluable partner in our research, their support has enabled us to utilise the power of technology to develop a means to monitor livestock, greatly enhancing the impact and outcomes of our research” Teresa Collins, Murdoch University.

The 3AI team is assisting with the development of a cattle behaviour and posture model using supervised machine learning techniques on accelerometer data along with an unsupervised model used to detect drinking events based on data from rumen temperature sensors. These models will help the researchers to better understand the impact of management interventions on the behaviour and welfare of Australian cattle. Furthermore, the 3AI team will assist the research team with scientific publications based on the developed methodology and analysis.
