La Trobe University has announced it will use the full range of services provided by the eResearch consortium, Intersect Australia.

These will include high performance computing (HPC) for advanced studies – especially in the fields of molecular modelling and computational chemistry – as well as software training and data storage.

This partnership is aligned with La Trobe’s Digital Research Strategy which aims to provide a world-class digital research environment to enable and accelerate new research outcomes through the engagement of researchers with advanced and emerging information and computing technologies. The Strategy is delivered through a collaboration between La Trobe’s Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), the Information & Communications Technology division and the Library.

Intersect is a not-for-profit body operated for member universities and institutions in Victoria, NSW and the ACT.

Dr Ghulam Murtaza, Intersect Digital Research Analyst, will be located on La Trobe’s main Melbourne campus from May.

La Trobe Executive Director and Chief Information Officer, Peter Nikoletatos, said Intersect Australia was a pivotal part of Australia’s research infrastructure.

Support for world-class research

‘It provides robust, innovative and collaborative technology to support world-class research.’

‘It also offers storage and analysis platforms, software engineering, expert consultancy and training programs to thousands of researchers every year.’

La Trobe has 30,000 students including about 7,600 international students at eight campuses in Victoria and NSW.

The University’s research strategy encourages cross-disciplinary innovation, specialisation and collaboration to help solve pressing national and global problems.

Mr Nikoletatos said La Trobe supercomputing users transitioned to Intersect HPC facilities from March 2016. They are now working with Intersect to introduce new Digital Research services.

‘Our researchers will be able to participate in  Digital Research training courses including Software Carpentry, Data Carpentry, research data management, Excel Fu for researchers, data visualisation, high performance computing and more.’

Mr Nikolatetos said La Trobe was rated in the top ten universities in Australia and top three in Victoria in the latest Government Excellence in Research for Australia rankings.

‘Best practice eResearch underpins our research performance and we welcome the move to work with Intersect to grow our Digital Research capabilities,’ he said.

Intersect CEO Marc Bailey said: ‘Our team of researchers, scientists and engineers is excited to welcome La Trobe University as the second Victoria-based member of Intersect.’

‘It is a pleasure to focus on research productivity with a simpatico organisation. La Trobe is now building its Digital Research capability in genuine partnership with Intersect as we continue to expand.’
