AARNet On-Net and Off-Net Traffic Charges Explained

Intersect’s Internet connection is supplied by AARNet. Part of the arrangement AARNet offers is that all traffic within the AARNet network is free and unlimited. This also includes networks that AARNet directly peers with.

Traffic to or from outside the AARNet network, so called Off-Net Traffic, is subject to charges for all transfers. Each AARNet customer has a quota for Off-Net Traffic based on their AARNet membership subscription. Beginning in late 2018 AARNet reduced Off-Net costs to $0.00 for a two year period as a trial.

AARNet’s current network maps showing On-Net sites are shown here: https://www.aarnet.edu.au/network-and-services/the-network

Network status is shown on the WeatherMap here: https://weathermap.aarnet.edu.au/weathermap/networkshop.html

A user can check whether a specific site is On-Net or Off-Net using the AARNet Looking Glass and On-Net/Off-Net tool here: https://support.aarnet.edu.au/hc/en-us/articles/218910068-On-net-Off-net-Tool
