Researcher training is one of the highest rated and most consistently valued things we do in our mission to increase research productivity. We're always being asked for new and different subject material, contextualised in a way that makes sense to researchers and scientists. In response to strong demand for researchers at member institutions, we have great pleasure in announcing a new set of targeted courses….

  • Regular Expressions on Command –  this course builds on the success of our introductory course "Powerful Text Searching and Matching with Regexes" and applies regexes to the command line. The course covers the classic Unix tools find, grep, sed, and awk, which are immensely useful for building automated research workflows that can transform, clean, summarise and bring consistency to complex datasets while harnessing the power of regular expressions.

  • Programming Essentials with Python – this live coding workshop  is based on the researcher-focused training modules from the highly regarded Software Carpentry Foundation. You'll learn:

Programming concepts and techniques.

Basic syntax, control structures and data types in Python.

Approaches to testing and defensive programming.

  • Introduction to Programming with MATLAB – in this course we build up a MATLAB program step-by-step to demonstrate programming techniques in order to visualise a research-related dataset.

In other news, in June we began ramping up the Intersect training program in Victoria.  New member La Trobe University took advantage of this with 75 researchers attending 7 courses offered at two campuses so far.  Attendees include researchers from a wide range of research areas.

Intersect is exploring further Victorian expansion and will provide an ongoing training series to La Trobe researchers, similar to the training programs in place for other member organisations.

Watch out for courses at your university, contact your friendly local eResearch Analyst or check the Intersect website for course details. Here are some of the courses coming up this month:
