Intersect has collaborated extensively with members on proposals for NeCTAR Virtual Laboratories (VL) and Research Tools (RT). We assisted members on a total of 27 proposals across the two calls. That assistance included technology advice, project scoping, and assisting consortia build their base of collaborators.
The 2013 Intersect HPC Resource Allocation Round is now open. Both NCI and Intersect are currently upgrading their HPC systems, and this means significantly more resources than last year. In most cases it is our intent to allocate resource applications in full.
Researchers at UNE are invited to the launch of the new N.C.W. Beadle Herbarium software and eResearch Open Day. A range of speakers will outline new services and software in agriculture, health, ecology and biomechanics.
Work has begun on extending and enhancing the Australian Schizophrenia Research Bank. This NeCTAR funded project will build on Intersect’s earlier work, deployed in 2009, which delivered a secure, commercial grade system for collecting, storing and sharing schizophrenia research data.
It was impossible to miss news reports in July that Australians only receive “appropriate” healthcare 57% of the time.
The CareTrack study is the first national overview of clinical care in Australia, studying the level of care provided to a sample of 1,154 adults for 22 of the most common conditions. It found that while parts of the Australian healthcare system were excellent, major deficiencies still existed, particularly in providing the proper care for conditions such as high blood pressure or sinusitis.
The first five nodes of the $50 million Research Data Storage Infrastructure (RDSI) project have been announced. The storage network is intended to transform the way in which research data collections are stored and accessed in Australia.
About 55 heads of agencies and senior representatives of eResearch agencies attended the second forum of Australian eResearch Organisations (AeRO) in Melbourne on 18 June. The forum pursued the top priorities identified in the first forum, and subsequently ranked in a targeted survey.
Intersect has been approved for RDSI by the CAUDIT vendor panel. This means that there will now be a simplified process of engagement for members dealing with the preferred suppliers.
RDSI and CAUDIT have established the panel of vendors to provide cost effective infrastructure and services for the sector in the following areas: storage, servers, network equipment, software and cloud storage.
CSIRO has joined Intersect as an affiliate member, becoming our thirteenth member.
CSIRO’s Director of eResearch Dr John Taylor said "CSIRO is looking forward to developing a strong partnership with Intersect in delivery of a broad range of eResearch services to CSIRO researchers based in NSW and around the nation".
Expect the next call for NeCTAR proposals to be announced soon. NeCTAR’s RFP is the process by which the Australian research community can apply for funding to create or develop research infrastructure. Stage 2 RFP release is scheduled for 30 April.
The next round of resource allocations for HPC resources opens today and remains open until 24th February. Allocations will be made for access to both McLaren and NCI facilities for the period from 1st April to 30th September 2012.
